Amazon image requirements: size, format and content rules

Short answer: Amazon has 9 product image rules in our library: 7 are measured automatically in the checker and 2 need a human check. Every rule below shows its requirement, a source and the date we last verified it (2026-10-29). Drop your images into the free checker to see which ones fail. Images never leave your browser.

Amazon is strict about the main image and relies on staff statements rather than one public checklist.

Amazon's own image guideline page requires a Seller Central login, so we could not read it. Most Amazon rules here come from Amazon staff replies on the Seller Forums; the list of reasons Amazon hides a main image comes from its public Help page “Image suppression”. The AI-people XMP tag rule comes only from secondary write-ups. Amazon has not published a first-party document for that tag that we could read.

  • Main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255)

    Main imageRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

Edge pixels pure white (RGB 255), at least 90% of the edge band

Why: Amazon staff state the main image must have a pure white background, RGB 255,255,255.

How to fix: Remove the background and fill it with pure white (#FFFFFF). Avoid off-white or grey shadows near the edges.

  • Product should fill 85% or more of the main image frame

    Main imageRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

Product fills at least 85% of the frame

Why: Amazon staff state the product should fill at least 85% of the frame. We measure the longer side of the non-white bounding box.

How to fix: Crop closer to the product, or scale the product up on the canvas until it fills at least 85% of the width or height.

  • Longest side at least 500 px

    All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

Longest side at least 500 px

Why: One Amazon staff post gives 500 px on the longest side as the minimum resolution (another post says 1000 px for zoom, see the zoom rule).

How to fix: Re-export from the original file at a larger size; do not upscale a small image.

  • Longest side at least 1000 px to enable zoom

    All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

Longest side at least 1000 px

Why: An Amazon staff post says a minimum of 1000 px on the longest side is needed for the zoom feature.

How to fix: Export the image with the longest side at 1000 px or more (1600 px+ recommended).

Sources are platform staff statements, not a public help page.

  • Longest side 1600 px or more recommended

    All imagesRecommendationMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

Longest side at least 1600 px

Why: An Amazon staff post recommends 1600 px+ for the zoom feature.

How to fix: Export at 1600 px or larger on the longest side.

Sources are platform staff statements, not a public help page.

  • Use JPEG or PNG

    All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

    Format: JPEG, PNG

Why: Two Amazon staff posts list different formats (JPEG/TIFF/PNG vs JPG/PNG/GIF/WEBP). Only JPEG and PNG appear in both.

How to fix: Convert the image to JPEG or PNG.

Sources are platform staff statements, not a public help page.

  • No extra text, graphics or watermarks on the main image

    Main imageRequiredHuman checkVerified 2026-10-29

    Human check

    • No added text or badges
    • No overlaid graphics or icons
    • No watermark or seller logo

Why: An Amazon staff post says to exclude additional text, graphics or watermarks from the main image. This needs a human look.

How to fix: Remove badges, captions, logos added on top, and watermarks. Keep text on the secondary images instead.

Sources are platform staff statements, not a public help page.

  • Main image shows only the product: no props, packaging, mannequin or hanger

    Main imageRequiredHuman checkVerified 2026-10-29

    Human check

    • Only the items being sold are in the picture
    • No props, packaging, brand or swing tags
    • The whole product is visible, nothing cropped off
    • Apparel and accessories: no mannequin or hanger

Why: Amazon's image suppression page lists additional items, props, packaging or tags, cropped products, and (for apparel and accessories) mannequins or hangers as reasons to hide a listing. A background repair keeps whatever is in the photo, so this needs a human look.

How to fix: Reshoot or retouch so only the product being sold is visible, whole, out of its packaging, without swing tags, props, mannequin or hanger.

  • Photorealistic AI-generated people: add XMP tag "contains-synthetic-performer"

    All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

    XMP dc:subject contains "contains-synthetic-performer"

Why: Seller-education sources report that Amazon asks sellers to add the keyword contains-synthetic-performer to XMP dc:subject for images of AI-generated photorealistic people. Amazon's own announcement was not readable; verify in Seller Central.

How to fix: Add contains-synthetic-performer to the XMP dc:subject field with an IPTC-compatible metadata editor before uploading.

Amazon has not published a first-party document for this that we could read. Sources are secondary write-ups, so treat this rule as unconfirmed.
