AI-generated image disclosure by platform

Short answer: Google Merchant Center asks AI images to keep the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag. Secondary sources report that Amazon wants the XMP keyword "contains-synthetic-performer" on images showing AI-generated people, but Amazon has not published a first-party document for that. Etsy and Walmart ask for truthful, accurate AI edits. The table separates what the checker can read from what it cannot.

Marketplaces are adding rules for AI-made images, from metadata tags to plain honesty about what the item looks like. Some are measurable in the file, some are policy statements.

  • Amazon: Photorealistic AI-generated people: add XMP tag "contains-synthetic-performer"

    All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

    XMP dc:subject contains "contains-synthetic-performer"

Why: Seller-education sources report that Amazon asks sellers to add the keyword contains-synthetic-performer to XMP dc:subject for images of AI-generated photorealistic people. Amazon's own announcement was not readable; verify in Seller Central.

How to fix: Add contains-synthetic-performer to the XMP dc:subject field with an IPTC-compatible metadata editor before uploading.

Amazon has not published a first-party document for this that we could read. Sources are secondary write-ups, so treat this rule as unconfirmed.

  • Walmart: AI-generated images must be truthful and accurate

    • Shape, color and parts match the real product
    • No accessories that are not included

Why: Walmart says images generated by AI must be truthful, accurate and not misleading.

How to fix: Compare the image with the real item; remove any AI-added feature, accessory or color shift.

  • Etsy: AI edits must not hide damage or change the item's look

    Human check

    • Color, shape and finish match the real item
    • No damage hidden by editing

Why: Etsy allows AI-assisted editing as long as it accurately represents the item; it must not hide damage or change appearance in a misleading way.

How to fix: Revert edits that alter color, shape, finish or condition.

  • Etsy: Disclose when an item is created using AI

    All imagesWarningHuman checkVerified 2026-10-29

    Human check

    • AI-created items are disclosed in the listing

Why: Etsy says sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI, and cannot present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own.

How to fix: Add the AI disclosure in the listing details.

  • Google Merchant Center: Generative AI images must keep IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata

    All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified 2026-10-29

IPTC DigitalSourceType is one of: TrainedAlgorithmicMedia, CompositeSynthetic, AlgorithmicMedia

Why: Google requires AI-generated images to include metadata indicating AI generation, such as the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag (TrainedAlgorithmicMedia, CompositeSynthetic or AlgorithmicMedia), and asks you not to strip it.

How to fix: Write IPTC DigitalSourceType into the file and do not let an export step remove embedded metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Which marketplaces require AI metadata in the image file?
In our library, Google Merchant Center asks for IPTC DigitalSourceType, and Amazon is reported by secondary sources to ask for an XMP keyword. Amazon has no first-party document we could read.
Does the checker read AI metadata?
Yes, locally in your browser, when you declare that the image is AI-generated or shows AI-generated people. It reads XMP dc:subject and the IPTC DigitalSourceType.

Not covered by our checker yet: anything not listed in the rules above. Always read the platform's own help page for the full policy.
