Amazon vs Walmart image requirements

Short answer: Both Amazon and Walmart ask for a pure white main image background (RGB 255). Amazon needs a longest side of at least 500 px and the product at 85% of the frame, while Walmart wants square images with a shortest side of at least 1500 px for zoom and recommends 2200 px. Amazon says CMYK is not preferred and Walmart lists RGB. One square RGB JPEG at 2200 px under 5 MB with a pure white background fits both.

Many sellers list on both. The two marketplaces agree on a pure white main image but differ on shape, size and color mode.

Amazon and Walmart image rules

Rules last verified October 30, 2026. Checked against public rules as of October 30, 2026; this is not a guarantee of acceptance.

  • Amazon: Main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255)

Main imageRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Edge pixels pure white (RGB 255), at least 90% of the edge band

Why: Amazon's Product image guide requires a pure white background (RGB color values: 255, 255, 255) for the main image. Its Image suppression page lists a non-white background as a reason to hide a listing.

How to fix: Remove the background and fill it with pure white (#FFFFFF). Avoid off-white or grey shadows near the edges.

  • Walmart: Main image on a seamless white background (255/255/255)

Main imageRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Edge pixels pure white (RGB 255), at least 90% of the edge band

Why: Walmart asks for a seamless white background, RGB 255/255/255, for main images (larger items may appear in an expected environment).

How to fix: Remove the background and fill with pure white.

  • Amazon: Product should fill 85% or more of the main image frame

Main imageRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Product fills at least 85% of the frame

Why: Amazon's Product image guide says to show the product as 85% of the image. It does not say "or more", but its Image suppression page lists a product that is too small in the frame as a reason to hide a listing, so we treat 85% as the minimum. We measure the longer side of the non-white bounding box.

How to fix: Crop closer to the product, or scale the product up on the canvas until it fills at least 85% of the width or height.

  • Amazon: Longest side at least 500 px

All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Longest side at least 500 px

Why: Amazon's Product image guide sets a minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side; smaller images cannot be uploaded. It also says: do not artificially enlarge small images.

How to fix: Re-export from the original file at a larger size; do not upscale a small image.

  • Amazon: Longest side 1600 px or more recommended

All imagesRecommendationMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Longest side at least 1600 px

Why: A reply from an Amazon account on the Seller Forums recommends 1600 px+ for the zoom feature. Amazon's Product image guide itself only recommends 1000 px or more.

How to fix: Export at 1600 px or larger on the longest side.

  • Walmart: At least 1500 x 1500 px for zoom

All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Shortest side at least 1500 px

Why: Walmart lists 1500px x 1500px as the minimum pixel dimensions for zoom.

How to fix: Re-export at 1500 px or larger on both sides.

  • Walmart: Recommended size 2200 x 2200 px

All imagesRecommendationMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

Shortest side at least 2200 px

Why: Walmart lists pixel dimensions of 2200px x 2200px.

How to fix: Export the square canvas at 2200 x 2200 px. Do not upscale small images to fill the frame; Walmart says this reduces quality.

  • Walmart: Square 1:1 image

All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

    Square (1:1, tolerance 0.01)

Why: Walmart lists the aspect ratio as 1:1 (square).

How to fix: Pad or crop the canvas to a square.

  • Amazon: Use JPEG, PNG or TIFF

All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

    Format: JPEG, PNG, TIFF

Why: Amazon's Product image guide lists JPEG (recommended), TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF. Its Technical image file requirements say BMP, PDF and EPS are not accepted. We cannot tell whether a GIF is animated, so a GIF is flagged for you to check. WebP is not on the list.

How to fix: Convert the image to JPEG (recommended), PNG or TIFF.

    Sources: Official, Official

  • Walmart: Use JPEG, PNG or BMP (no GIF)

All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

    Format: JPEG, PNG, BMP

Why: Walmart lists JPEG, JPG, PNG, BMP and says GIF images are not permitted.

How to fix: Convert the image to JPEG or PNG.

  • Amazon: Use RGB, not CMYK

All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

    Color mode: not CMYK

Why: Amazon's Technical image file requirements accept RGB and say CMYK is not preferred: convert to RGB before uploading. Grayscale is acceptable only for images that accurately depict gray or silver metal products, so it is not flagged here.

How to fix: Convert the color mode to RGB before uploading.

    Sources: Official

  • Walmart: RGB color format

All imagesWarningMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

    Color mode: RGB only

Why: Walmart lists the color format as RGB (8 bits per pixel).

How to fix: Convert CMYK or grayscale files to RGB.

  • Walmart: File size 5 MB or less

All imagesRequiredMeasured automaticallyVerified October 30, 2026

File size at most 5 MB

Why: Walmart lists the file size as 5MB or less.

How to fix: Re-export with higher JPEG compression.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same image on Amazon and Walmart?
Often yes. A square RGB JPEG with a pure white background, a longest side of 2200 px, the product filling 85% of the frame and a file under 5 MB meets the size, shape and background rules of both in our library. Content rules such as no watermarks still need a manual check, and each marketplace can change its rules.
Which has stricter image size rules, Amazon or Walmart?
On size, Walmart asks for more: a shortest side of 1500 px for zoom, against 500 px on the longest side for Amazon. Amazon is stricter about the product share of the main image, at 85%.
